Getting Lost

In the last year, Erin has really become quite a reader. It started last summer when she decided to read the Harry Potter series. She started reading them in June, and in October (just before her 9th birthday) finished the 7th and final book. Since then, she's read everything from the first book in the Twilight series (the only one I'll let her read at this point) to a few Judy Blume classics. Her latest literary obsession is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Today we went to Barnes & Noble so I could buy her books 2 and 3 in the series, which (the way she reads) should keep her busy through the weekend. I have to say, though, I love seeing her getting lost in a book. It reminds me of myself at that age. I only hope that her love of the written word lasts throughout her lifetime, as it has for me so far.

  1. That is awesome to see! Usually I see kids at this age consumed with their digital games or ipones or ipods! Awesome for Erin!!

  4. Both of my children fell in love with reading with some of the same series. Sadly, it died down a little when the schools issued required reading and the kids no longer had choices. My son still has some discretion over his book choices - my daughter, not so much.

  5. Great shot! And how fun to nurture a little reader! Let me advocate for an ereader. . . like the barnes & noble nook! Just check and see if your library has a subscription to Overdrive, and then you can download books FOR FREE! (Can't beat that!) (And it's a fun gadget :) )

  6. Just thought I'd come back. . . .I'm pretty sure that even if your local library doesn't have Overdrive, there's lots of libraries in southern California that have grouped together and share subscription to Overdrive. . . .like San Diego's.

  7. I love this. It seems so many kids today become so involved in computer or video games that reading never becomes a hobby. This is a great capture.

  8. Thanks, everyone. I'm really proud of Erin for her love of reading. Sure, she loves her electronic toys, too. But on days like this, when she chooses to curl up and read, I can't help but be thrilled.

Angela, I've had a Kindle for a couple of years now (can you say "early adopter?" LOL!). It's a shame that it's not compatible with the library systems, but I do love it! Erin's read a couple of books on it as well. They're awesome!
